Drunk Driving

In addition to being a writer and editor, I also teach a few college courses. Last week, a student’s boyfriend wrote me, informing me that my student was in a coma after being hit by a drunk driver. Thankfully, she is now doing well and will be going home soon.

Unfortunately, not all such accident victims are so fortunate. Many thousands die each year. Sadly, despite much tougher laws and strong public disapproval of drunk driving, it is too often still the case the drunk drivers kill people.

A good Defensive Driving Class can give you more information about the dangers of drunk driving. For now, here’s some good advice. First, if you drink, don’t drive—period. If you’re one of the sober drivers (as most are), here are some signs to look out for while driving. Notice cars that:

Go too fast or too slow
Have drivers who don’t seem to be “with it”
Change speeds or switch lanes erratically
Don’t have their lights on, or have them always on bright
